The purpose of the mentor/advocate program at GVS is to provide our students with individual assistance to help them determine their academic and career “pathways” in order to encourage them to successfully reach their goals.
- We expect our mentors to meet with their students several times during the year to discuss goals and lay out pathways to meet those goals.
- Mentors will track the academic progress of the student, ideally on a monthly basis, first within GVS and then at the student’s new school. Advocates should keep a written record that includes meeting time and dates, topics discussed, indications of progress, problems encountered, and recommendations by the Advocate for follow-up. Advocates commit to keeping in touch with their students for at least one year after the student leaves GVS.
- Mentors assist students and their parents with the enrollment process when the student leaves GVS and enters her next educational program. They make sure students have the documents and necessary health forms they need to enroll in the school they enter upon leaving GVS.
At GVS, we believe Student Advocates will be crucial to the success of GVS’ mission to show our students the wealth of opportunities that are within their reach and to help them “succeed in life and fulfill their dreams.” Quite often GVS community members are our student’s primary source of information about academic and vocational opportunities beyond GVS, so this volunteer activity is a crucial part of our program.
